Cardboard Images and Shadows

Raymond A. King

When the 76 year old jazz pianist Raymond A. King from Philadelphia taught a workshop to inner-city kids ten years ago, he made musical instruments out of cardboard to illustrate their use to his class. This soon evolved into his working out intricate designs and carving them into cardboard as well as using the texture of cardboard in innovative ways. He creates three-dimensional wall sculptures with layers of plain and corregated board..  The exhibition at five myles also shows some of his shadow portraits of well-known musicians.  An intricately carved out piece of cardboard is front lit to produce a portrait on the gallery wall that almost resembles a photograph.

Mr. King’s small apartment in North Philadelphia is literally filled with his work and five myles is pleased to exhibited a very small amount of it. The work has also been seen at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
