Dionis Ortiz

Dionis Ortiz’ new cyanotypes prints and vinyl tile inlays are two of the many media that the artist uses to create a physical rendering of his life. In his own words, he is attempting “to create a coming of age story as a Dominican American, exploring masculinity, vulnerability, the supernatural, family, and religion, as well as how culture plays a role in my community and in my life. “ The values, history, and culture that he wishes to pass on to his son are the focus of the work in this exhibition.

About the Artist

Dionis Ortiz is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video and installation.
He was the Fall 2018 Artist in Residence at Material for the Arts. In 2013, he was accepted into The Bronx Museum of the Arts’ Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program. That same year, he was also the recipient of the Studio Immersion Project fellowship from the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.  In 2011 he was commissioned by the Harlem River Park Fund to create an image that reflected the Central and East Harlem community. The image was then reproduced onto etched steel plaque.  In 2009, he was commissioned to create a mural design for Heineken’s Mural Arts Program and assisted Metropolitan Transit Authority grant recipient Jose Ortiz in painting eleven panels on canvas. He also assisted lead muralist Eduardo A. Rabel in painting five concrete water pipes at the Teaneck Creek Conservancy in New Jersey.

In addition, he established Inspiration Fine Art, a fine art gallery where he curated various group exhibitions and showcased the works of emerging and established artists. He has received the Individual Artist grant from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and the Harlem Community Arts Fund, Harlem Arts Alliance. He graduated in 2001 with a B.F.A from the State University of New York at Purchase College. He received his Masters in Fine Art from Hunter College in 2018.

DIRECTIONS:

Take 2, 3, or 4 trains to Franklin Avenue. Walk two blocks against the traffic on Franklin. Walk ¾ block to 558 St. Johns Place. FiveMyles is within easy walking distance from the Brooklyn Museum.
