fashionably black
fashionably black is an exhibition of work by Mysteek Wear, a group of Brooklyn-based fashion designers masterminded by Alexander Gause. On opening night young people from five myles’ neighborhood will model Mysteek’s latest designs to live music accompaniment.
The designers in the exhibition include Michael Leon, St. Clair Phillip, Carla Selby and Michael Leon.
The exhibition is curated by designer Joe Grannum and five myles’ Director Hanne Tierney.
Alexander Gause founded Mysteek to bring together people of various backgrounds to design clothes. He came to New York a year ago from a small town in Georgia with a strong belief in “making dreams come true by working together”. This exhibition is an acknowledgement of his perseverance, and of his determination to achieve this vision. Mysteek’s clothes are designed for the pleasure of pleasing and being desired. The fabrics used are soft, untextured, and compliment the movements of the body. The graceful simplicity of the designs in the exhibition gives these clothes their user-friendly look. Several of the evening dresses have been sewn with 18-karat gold thread, a luxurious secret for the wearer. With some of the clothes, men’s as well as women’s, the designers have let their African roots come into play by using African fabrics and modifying African styles.
