For Myles
Curated by Marian Griffiths
For Myles, former SculptureCenter Director Marian Griffiths’ first independent curating project since leaving the center, will open June 16, 1999 at five myles, a new performance and exhibition space in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
For Myles is dedicated to the memory of gallery founder and performance artist Hanne Tierney’s son Myles Tierney, a journalist for the Associated Press who was killed in Sierra Leone in January 1999. Six emerging artists have been selected for the elegiac and spiritual concerns that characterize their work; Terry Boddie, Maria Elena Gonzalez, Cathleen Lewis, Jack Pospisil, Michael Lee Poy, and Veronica Ryan.
Pospisil’s “Tether”, a 27 foot long cast iron and steel spine sympathetically fetishize the invisible connection which binds all of humanity…Ryan’s “Perpetual”, composed of 42 panels of apple cushions, is kind of a visual diary, a quiet meditation on the accumulation of experience…Gonzalez’s invitingly interactive and elegant sculptural contribution will include two pairs of tiled stools…Poy’s deeply personal “Crystal City” references a utopian yet nuanced vision of the new Jerusalem…Lewis’ “Scarification, Proudly USA” will examine and reconfigure implements from the Black American cultural past…Boddie uses photography to explore the space between metaphysical and physical worlds using images of Capoelra, the martial art form brought to Brazil from Africa.
five myles occupies a 1.500 square foot former warehouse space. It will present sophisticated low-tech work in music, spoken word, performance art, video works, painting and sculpture. Gallery programs are designed to serve not only New York’s artistic community, but five myles’ own neighborhood as well.
five myles is located at 558 St. Johns Place in Brooklyn, between Classon and Franklin Avenues.
