Houses, Rocks and Constellations

Donna Dennis

Houses, Rocks and Constellations coexist uneasily in new small box dioramas Donna Dennis will exhibit. These small works expand on themes Dennis is exploring in a new on-going large installation. A small house sits far up on a thrust of rock. Another against a dark and gritty monolithic wall, whose metal straps, bolts, bricked up patches and other retainers suggest a fragility that threatens the house even as the blocks of cooled magma recall tectonic plates and enormous, impersonal and ancient forces. Telescopes and cables to communications towers suggest a hunger for deep space, misjudged distances and misplaced connections.

Dennis’ lyrical and atmospheric architecturally inspired installations have been widely exhibited both in the United States and Europe. Her installation “Subway with Silver Girders” was recently installed in Miami in the Marguelis Collection at the Warhouse and her work was seen last year in Arti & Archittetura, 1900 –2000 at Genoa, Italy. She will also be exhibiting a series of gouaches for a new book Nine Nights Meditation in collaboration with the poet Anne Waldman.
