roya amigh
Iranian artist Roya Amigh will be in residence at FiveMyles from July 17 through August 5, 2017. Amigh will piece together elements of the writings of the Persian poets Ferdowki, Rumi and Hafez and of the legends depicted in Persian miniatures to enable her to question the complexities in the stories of Iranian women.
Echoing the natural distortions of memory, she creates her own version of this mythology, featuring stories that happened to her or to the women she knows.
Roya’s studio practices amplify her intentions. Large numbers of tiny drawings, created by gluing thread onto paper, are assembled and result in fragile structures that reflect the ephemeral quality of memories suspended in space. After gluing, peeling, and re-gluing sheets of lace and translucent hand-made paper, she rips them open and makes marks with scissors and sharp knives. Strings are strung from wall to wall and tie together skeletal forms of hoops and sprung rods that literally let the stories and poems flutter in the space.
Roya will work in the gallery space for three weeks, from July until August 5, when her installation opens to the public and will be on view through August 27. With this exhibition the artist aims to achieve her intended impression of dissociation and disorientation experienced by the women whose stories she has deconstructed.
about the artist:
Roya Amigh received a BFA from the Science and Culture University in Theran, and an MFA from Boston University in 2012. She has been in the U.S. on an artist visa since 2010, but being a citizen of a Muslim country, she knows that showing her work in the here and exchanging ideas with American artists will soon come to an end. We are very happy to be able to have made this opportunity possible for the public to see her delicate and beautiful work.
