no place like home
Marcus Jahmal
opening reception: saturday, january 14, 6-8pm
Marcus Jahmal’s paintings for No Place Like Home present colorful domestic settings. In each painting the viewer is directed to peer down wonky hallways and round sharp corners. Questions arise when looking at the paintings: What has invited me in? Who left the space this way? The rooms at first seem cosy, welcoming, but upon closer inspection a sense of unease grows. Unusually placed and balancing objects, or disproportionately sized figures appear. The scenes are cheerfully, flatly colored, and feel both full and empty. The rooms seem to long for human contact, or maybe are recovering from it. With one miniature sculpture, the figure from the paintings, Jahmal makes the paintings feel like a window into the mind of the sculpted figure; He has stepped out of his home and world, remembering some strange, solitary domestic life.
