OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 6-8PM

This summer FiveMyles invited two emerging artists to curator other emerging artists in two consecutive exhibitions during July and August. Listening to younger artists enthusiastically talk about work they have seen in their fellow artists’ studios gave the impetus for these exhibitions. Most of this work stays in the studios, and we thought that the two exhibits are a very small way to bring this art before the public. It also interested us to see work that is thought of as contemporary and strong by this younger generation of artists. 

For this second exhibition Dionis Ortiz has invited fellow artists to participate. He asked them to consider the theme of seen and unseen aspects of racism and to investigate how systematic structural patterns in a given society assign invisibility to a section of the population. 

Andy Van Dinh was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he earned his BFA in Painting at the University of Calgary. He currently lives in New York where he obtained his MFA in Painting at Hunter College. 

Kathleen Granados received her MFA from CUNY Hunter College in 2020. In 2019 she presented Present Histories: An East Harlem Photo Album, co-presented by the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, Friends of Art Park Alliance, and NYC Parks. 

Peter Hoffmeister creates work that challenges dominant cultural narratives in the United States, using historical events, places, and documents as a lens through which to understand the present. His most recent exhibition was at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum in Manhattan.

Dionis Ortiz is a multimedia artist, community art producer, and educator who works in printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Drawing from his experiences as a child born and raised in Harlem of Dominican decent, he creates geometric, process-based works from ill-regarded and found materials to celebrate the people of the diaspora. He was a participant in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) Program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, received a Rema Hort Mann Artist Community Engagement Grant, and has been an Artist in Residence at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

Take 2, 3, or 4 trains to Franklin Avenue. Walk two blocks against the traffic on Franklin. Walk ¾ block to 558 St. Johns Place. FiveMyles is within easy walking distance from the Brooklyn Museum.
