Steel and Roses: a winter garden
Sam Tufnell
on view: January 12 – February 16, 2008
Opening reception: Saturday, January 12, 4-7pm
Steel rosebushes constructed by the young artist Sam Tufnell turn the FiveMyles gallery into a melancholy winter garden. Each thorn, leaf and rose petal has been carefully and precisely marked with a torch and then welded to the branches. A tall, rusted tree, its leaves gone, has the look of endless winter.
Sam Tufnell has worked on this steel vegetation since graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 2005, and this exhibition gives him the opportunity to see the work in a completed installation. It also offers FiveMyles the opportunity to introduce the public to the work of an artist who has not previously exhibited.
DIRECTIONS:
Take 2, 3, or 4 trains to Franklin Avenue. Walk two blocks against the traffic on Franklin. Walk ¾ block to 558 St. Johns Place. FiveMyles is within easy walking distance from the Brooklyn Museum.
