Exploring the intimate scale of the Plus space, Vladimir Cybil Charlier’s site specific installation, Desire, Johnny was, engages the complex cultural dynamics linking two important geographic markers: The Caribbean and The United States. Referencing pop art, Caribbean and African American traditions, the work  seeks to draw the viewer in a play between private and public spaces.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Vladimir Cybil Charlier was born in Elmhurst, Queens and attended primary and secondary school in Haiti. She received a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Queens College and an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts. She’s an alumni of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and of The Studio Museum of Harlem artist in residence program. She has shown her work in many Caribbean and Latin American venues as well as in Europe. In 2006, she participated to the Venice Biennale. Her work has been shown at the Grand Palais in Paris France, the Perez Art Museum in Miami, the Bronx Museum for the Arts and the Studio Museum in Harlem, amongst other places.

DIRECTIONS:

Take 2, 3, or 4 trains to Franklin Avenue. Walk two blocks against the traffic on Franklin. Walk ¾ block to 558 St. Johns Place. FiveMyles is within easy walking distance from the Brooklyn Museum.
