Modes of Freedom II
This event was organised by Cait Campbell and FreeStrata Projects
The second instalment of the four-part programming series, Modes of Freedom, will feature a live poetry performance from a currently incarcerated writer, alongside works by local artists whose practices are centered around uncovering methods of creative intervention to express ones’ visionary and powerful voice within constraints of justice today. The evening’s event marks the continuation of a journey of collective freedom through the lens of various forms of expression, materiality, and creation. We invite you to share in public dialogue and contemplation of how poetry and language can be used to both understand, as well as confront the American criminal (in)justice system and the unequal, hegemonic, structures that sustain it.
The four-part programming series, Modes of Freedom, conceptualizes liberation through different forms of artistic intervention and practices to interrogate expanded theories of justice and approach questions of race, belonging and social engagement. Featuring diverse written and visual works by minority artists and creators in their own words, on their own terms, this continuous project sees “Freedom” in the United States as an ongoing process, and process of processes, not to strive for, but to create from…
These collective, integrated, actions are a response to the fact that traditional forms of justice have not only under-supported communities of color and marginalized populations but have been harmful and will continue to be unless we seek new modes of social thought and creative modes of action- to redefine spaces of change and establish making practices in new ways that reimagine our current structures of power and systems of control in ways that re-connect them to communities and value freedom for all, not just the many.
Please join us on the 19th of June, July, August, and September as we work together, from behind bars or beyond walls, to dismantle them.
